Frequently Asked Questions

What is contents and liabillity isurance?

Contents and liability insurance is a type of insurance designed for renters. It protects tenants against financial loss if their personal belongings are damaged or stolen, and if they accidentally cause damage to the rental property.

Contents insurance covers the tenant’s personal possessions, such as electronics, clothing, furniture, and other valuables inside the home. Tenants’ liability insurance covers accidental damage to the landlord’s property, such as carpets, walls, or fixtures.

Together, contents and liability insurance for tenants helps renters protect both their belongings and their potential financial responsibility during a tenancy.

Why is tenant liability and contents insurance important for renters in the UK?

Tenants’ liability and contents insurance can provide important financial protection during a tenancy.

Many renters assume that the landlord’s insurance covers everything inside the property, but landlord insurance typically only protects the building and the landlord’s belongings. It does not usually cover a tenant’s personal possessions. Contents and liability insurance can help renters by:

  • Protecting personal belongings against theft fire, or water damage

  • Covering accidental damage to the landlord’s property

  • Providing financial protection if repairs or replacements are needed

  • Offering peace of mind during the tenancy

For many tenants, having renters’ insurance in the UK helps reduce the financial risk of unexpected events.

Is renters' insurance worth it?

For many tenants, renters’ insurance can be a valuable form of financial protection. Replacing personal belongings such as laptops, phones, clothing, and furniture can be expensive if they are damaged or stolen. Contents insurance helps cover those costs.

Tenants’ liability insurance can also help if accidental damage occurs to the landlord’s property, which might otherwise result in repair costs. While it is not usually a legal requirement in the UK, many renters find that contents and liability insurance offers peace of mind during their tenancy.

Do I need to pay up front for my policy?

No. We understand that moving is expensive, so you’ll pay nothing upfront for your policy; we’ll charge monthly.

Is the cover on a new-for-old basis?

If an item is damaged and cannot be economically repaired, we’ll replace it with a new one of comparable quality.

Does each tenant take out a policy, or does it cover the household?

Your policy will cover you and anyone living with you under your tenancy agreement. Other tenants will have to take out their own policy if they don’t meet this criteria.

Do I have to specify all of my individual items?

You'll need to specify any items inside the property with a value of over £2,500, such as precious metals or stones, jewellery, watches, or works of art. All of your other belongings will be covered up to the total amount that you've chosen to insure.
